When to Buy a Maternity Bra in AUS — and What Size to Get

When to Buy a Maternity Bra in AUS — and What Size to Get

One of the most common questions we hear at Hotmilk is: when should I actually buy a maternity bra? The answer depends on your body, your stage of pregnancy, and what you're feeling — but there are some clear signals to watch for.

Here's what to expect at each stage, and how to make sure you're buying the right thing at the right time.

First trimester: listen to your body

For many women, breast changes are one of the earliest signs of pregnancy — tenderness, sensitivity, and a feeling that your current bras just aren't working anymore. This can happen as early as six to eight weeks.

You don't necessarily need a dedicated maternity bra at this stage, but you do need something that isn't restrictive or uncomfortable. A soft, wire-free bra in a slightly larger cup size is often the right move in the first trimester. Hold off on investing in a full maternity wardrobe just yet — your size will continue to change.

Second trimester: time to invest

By the second trimester, most women have gone up one to two cup sizes and sometimes a band size too. This is typically the right time to invest in one or two good maternity bras that

will see you through the rest of pregnancy.

Look for styles with adjustable straps, multiple hook-and-eye positions in the band, and fabrics with genuine stretch. A maternity bra at this stage doesn't need nursing clips yet — unless you want to buy ahead and get the dual function from the start.

Third trimester: prepare for feeding

In the third trimester, many mamas size up again as the body begins preparing for milk production. This is the time to think about your hospital bag and your first nursing bras.

We recommend having two to three nursing bras ready before your baby arrives — ideally bought in the last four to six weeks of pregnancy when your size is closest to your postpartum size. Buy for your current size, with room to accommodate engorgement in the early days.

Postpartum: expect more change

When your milk comes in — usually two to five days after birth — your breasts will likely be larger and fuller than they've ever been. This is temporary. Once feeding is established (usually by four to six weeks), your size will settle into a more consistent pattern.

This is why Hotmilk designs many styles with FlexFit technology — seamless, stretchy constructions that expand up to four cup sizes to accommodate exactly this kind of fluctuation without requiring you to buy a new bra every few weeks.

What size maternity bra should I get in AUS?

The honest answer is: it depends on where you are in your journey. As a general guide, most women go up one to two cup sizes during pregnancy and may go up further when milk comes in. Band size can also increase, particularly in the second and third trimesters.

Rather than guessing, we recommend using Hotmilk's fit quiz. Our team fits mamas from A to J cup and can help you find the right size at every stage.
