Inside the Factories: Our Designer Tessa's Trip to China

Every year, our designer Tessa travels to China to visit the factories where Hotmilk bras actually come to life. And every year, she says the same thing strikes her first. It's never the machinery. It's the people.

Walking onto a factory floor, Tessa says what hits you is the energy. The productivity. The sheer humanity of it — real people, working with real skill, making something by hand, for us. Even where a machine is doing the stitching, there's always a person behind it, guiding it, checking it, caring whether it comes out right.

It's easy to think of manufacturing as an abstract, automated thing happening far away. It isn't. It's a room full of people who care about the details most customers will never see.

Then it's the technology that gets her every time. The graphic shapes of paper patterns laid out like art. Technical drawings glowing on computer screens. The force and precision of the sewing machines, running line after line without a single wasted movement. This trip, Tessa watched a new digital machine apply adhesive to our bonded garments — a small thing to describe, but genuinely thrilling to watch in person. Seeing exactly how it all comes together, stitch by stitch and decision by decision, is something she says she'll never get tired of.

This trip also marked Tessa's 20th anniversary travelling to China. Twenty years in, and she's still amazed every single time.

Between the factory floors, there's tea with the bosses, open conversations with technical teams, merchandisers, sourcing specialists, patternmakers and sample machinists. Tessa gets shown through every stage — the cutting floor, moulding and pressing, sewing, packing, and always, quality control. So many hands touch a single bra before it ever reaches you.

One moment from this trip stuck with her. Tessa met a new manufacturer, was welcomed warmly into her town, and felt the beginnings of a real friendship. Later that day, they realised they'd been on the same train home that morning — in the same carriage, without even knowing it. She'd loaded Tessa up with local sweets, an incredible condensed milk dessert with lychee, mango and tapioca, and the freshest seafood soup, made right in front of her with the softest oysters and greens she'd ever tasted. "I actually feel like we are best friends, and we have known each other forever," she said. Tessa agreed completely. It was wonderfully bizarre, and exactly the kind of moment that makes these trips so much more than a supply chain visit.

There's a running joke with our suppliers that Tessa always brings the typhoon with her. This trip proved it true yet again. An hour after she landed, Hong Kong signalled 8 — the point where everything shuts down — then 9 overnight, edging toward hurricane strength. Her train from Hong Kong into China the next day was cancelled, along with every high-speed service for the two days after that. Ferries turned around. High-rises rocked gently in the wind. She ran between buildings in saturating rain. In the end, Tessa booked a flight and made it into China safely the following night, having spent the day before watching a movie on her laptop, since even the taxis had stopped running.

Every trip like this comes back to the same thing: striving for excellence in everything we do, so we can keep providing real solutions for the women who need comfort, support, and to feel their best, every single day. Nothing matters more than being there for our customers when they need us. Staying close to the hub of lingerie sourcing and manufacture keeps that relationship — and the innovation it makes possible — genuinely central to who we are.
